Why is a compression garment important postoperatively?

A compression garment is used postoperatively for many plastic surgery procedures. It helps with reduction of swelling which in turn reduces pain. It also helps with procedures where there is significant skin undermining so that she skin scars back to the deep structures in the ideal position. Compression can also reduce potential dead space under the skin where fluid can collect. We call this a hematoma (collection of blood) or a seroma (collection of clear yellow fluid). They are worn for different lengths of time depending on the procedure that was performed. It is important for you to get this garment from your plastic surgeon because they are ordered specific for you depending on your measurements. If you order them yourself, your plastic surgeon can’t be responsible for your results because you may get it too tight or too loose. You will be measured for this garment at the time of your consultation.
